He did not come to fashion through fashion.

Fifteen years building revenue engines — across industrial equipment, coffee brands, e-commerce, after an engineering degree from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad — had taught him one thing above all else: the gap between what exists and what should exist is rarely about product. It is almost always about observation. He had grown a stalled e-commerce business for one of India’s largest consumer brands into one of its fastest-growing channels.

When he returned to Lucknow in 2024 — after a corporate career and years in Bangalore, after building businesses for brands not his own — he wanted to start something. He looked at his city. He looked at its craft.

Chikankari was everywhere.

On ethnic. On polyester. Even machine embroidery, passed off as authentic.

The craft had been coded to occasion long before anyone tried to change that — so when “modern” finally arrived, it was rarely a rethink. Just a lazily modified ethnic piece, with the embroidery as an afterthought.

Every garment he found was coded for ceremony. The embroidery was extraordinary. The context had become a ceiling. The resistance came early and from every direction. Vendors said the MOQ was too low. They said sell ethnic first, build volume, then we’ll talk about modern. They offered to fund inventory — on their terms, in their categories. The entire ecosystem was organised to pull the idea back into what already existed.

He didn’t take the funding. He didn’t change the category. He built it the way he saw it.

ZINAVRAA began as an observation, became a conviction, and is now a brand. Not ethnic wear reimagined. Not craft preserved for posterity. Everyday clothing that happens to carry something extraordinary — placed with intention, worn without occasion.

The engineer’s instinct is still present in how the brand thinks: where does this belong on the garment, why here and not there, what does it add that wasn’t there before.

The rest is Lucknow. The rest is Chikankari. The rest is still being made.
